How to store a dog long line

I recommend long lines for dog’s who are still working on recall (coming back when called). In my opinion they are vital to most new dog owners shopping list. However, they take some getting used to and can become tangled very easily.

Tangled dog long line

A few years ago, on a course, I was shown by someone how to store long lines and as I have found it so useful over the years I thought I would share it here.

  1. Hold the end of the longline without the clip on.
  2. With your spare hand stroke down the long line as far as you can reach, take hold and place that section into your other hand, creating a medium length loop. Repeat until all the lead is in loops in one hand.
  3. When you reach the end of the longline (with the clip on), wrap the last bit around and around your collection of loops, until the excess lead is used up, then pass the clip through the handle/hole that has been created at the top of the previous loops.
  4. Clip the lead onto your dog guard or crate in the car or onto your belt, food pouch or back pack etc, for easy transport. Or simply hang the longline on a hook at home for storage.

Here’s a quick video showing the steps:
