book, recommendation, review
Last weekend I travelled to Manchester by train for my friends wedding which gave me 10 child free hours so I decided to fill it with an audio book (as am such a slow reader). I chose to revisit ‘The Other End of The Leash’ by Patricia McConnell. I would highly recommend this book to every dog owner and anyone wanting to learn more about dog behaviour.
Patricia takes you through stories of the dogs she has had over the years on her farm. She has a superb knack for describing situations, as such that you could imagine you were there. For each topic she has real life experiences and describes the dog’s body language with great detail. Her love for dogs is clear, I just wish I could live on her farm.
Here’s my favourite quotes from the book:
“Humans and dogs often miscommunication and the consequences range from mildly annoying to life threatening. Some of this miscommunication stems from an owners not understanding dog behaviour and how animals learn. Training dogs turns out not to be intuitively obvious and the more you learn, the easier and more fun it will be.”
“There are an infinite number of things that your dog can do wrong but only a few that he can do right. Why don’t you make life easy and teach your dog what right is, rather than continually saying no to yet one more thing that is wrong.”
